The BEST Black Bean Burgers with Sriracha Mayo

I love a good burger! I think “burger making” has become quite an art in the food scene in more recent years. It's not just a simple summertime or tailgate food with the standard ketchup and mustard anymore. You gotta dress it up with fun toppings to suit your mood. 👍🏻

There are so many different ways to tailor a burger for a specific diet. Maybe you are trying to cut out red meat and opt for a turkey or chicken burger. Maybe you are trying to cut down on your carbs so you make a lettuce bun instead of bread. Maybe you are going meatless for the day and are ready give a black bean burger a try. There are so many ways to switch it up!

This black bean burger contains more than just black beans. It is filled with other nutritious vegetables such as bell peppers, carrots, mushrooms, and onion. The spices give it a little bit of a smokey flavor, and the oats hold the patty together! I find this black bean burger to be moist and chewy, which is just what you would want out of a classic comfort food.

There are a few ways to cook the black bean burger. The directions below are for a simple stovetop method. Careful not to burn them! But you could also place them on a baking pan lined with parchment paper. With oven at 400 degrees, cook the patties for 6 minutes on each side. I have also done it in the air fryer at 400 degrees for 10 minutes and no flip. Since all of the ingredients inside the patty are fully cooked, we are just trying to toast up the sides to make the patty firm.

This burger is served with white cheddar cheese, spinach, tomato, and Sriracha mayo. But feel free to add or omit toppings. Avocado could be another tasty addition. My favorite side dish for the burger is air fryer french fries. I roast mine with olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and a ton of dried dill. They turn out so crispy and fresh! It's a perfect meal, in my opinion. 😋

I hope you enjoy these black bean burgers. Let me know if you try them out or find a way to make them your own! Take care everyone!

The BEST Black Bean Burgers with Sriracha Mayo

Ingredients:

  • 1 (15oz) can low sodium black beans

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • ½ yellow bell pepper, small diced

  • ½ cup carrot, diced

  • ¼ cup baby bella mushrooms, diced

  • ¼ onion, small diced

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • ¼ tsp smoked paprika

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp chili powder

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ¼ cup old fashioned oats

  • 2 tomatoes, sliced

  • 6 slices white cheddar cheese

  • 2 cups spinach

  • 6 whole wheat hamburger buns

  • Sriracha mayonnaise: ½ cup mayonnaise + 1 tablespoon Sriracha

Directions:

  1. Rinse and drain black beans. Place in a small, covered bowl and microwave for 2 minutes on high power. Allow to cool.

  2. In a small frying pan, sauté bell pepper, carrot, mushroom, onion, and garlic with olive oil. Remove from heat when vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.

  3. In a food processor, combine black beans, sautéed veggies, cumin, paprika, salt, pepper, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, and oats. Pulse until ingredients are combined.

  4. Form into 6 patties. (If making ahead of time, mixture can be stored in fridge overnight and formed into patties when ready to be cooked. They are easier to shape when chilled!)

  5. Cook patties on stovetop frying pan for about 3 minutes on each side.

  6. Add cheese for final minute of cooking to melt.

  7. Serve on toasted buns with spinach, tomato, and sriracha mayonnaise.
