CULINARY MEDICINE

I have always had a passion for food and exercise. One of the major reasons I chose the West Virginia University School of Medicine was the option to pursue the Culinary and Lifestyle Medicine Track. I had the opportunity to learn about medicine in a way that can help patients manage chronic conditions by changing their diet and daily activities. I studied a variety of culinary techniques and nutritional guidelines for a variety of demographics. As a newly Certified Culinary Medicine Specialist I have resources and knowledge to "prescribe wellness" for treatment and management of chronic diseases.

It is important to remember that healthy is different for everyone. Resources such as fresh fruits and vegetables, public parks, clean air, transportation, genetics, and socioeconomic status all influence individualized health. It is important to keep these factors in mind when educating and motivating patients to pursue changes for their wellbeing. I try my best to live out these principles themselves, too!

I intend to share what I learned in medical school, clinical practice, and culinary medicine training on this blog.  I want to be a resource for those struggling with weight, chronic conditions, mental health, or financial needs to find meals and activities that are best for their lifestyles.

Disease Modifying Nutrition Therapy is actually recommended as the first line treatment for diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. I loved this podcast by The Curbsiders featuring by Dr. Michelle McMacken. She talks through her patient-centered approach to nutrition as therapy and touches on a variety of popular food trends including Impossible Meat, the Mediterranean lifestyle, and plant based diets.

The Game Changers is a 2018 documentary featuring elite athletes training for high stakes competitions. It is an interesting perspective of utilizing plant based nutrition to enhance performance and endurance. It unravels the role of protein in diet and includes testimonies of powerlifters and runners.
