ABOUT ME

Hi there, and thanks for choosing to view my blog! My name is Mia Gabriele, and I am a 2023 MD graduate from West Virginia University School of Medicine. I created this blog in 2019 to document my journey through medical school and now into residency. This blog is all about how I choose to balance medicine, life, travel, faith, exercise, and food. I will share some things learned, memories made, recipes shared, and cakes baked.

I was raised in a lovely Italian household, eating pasta and meatballs every Sunday afternoon with my family. My Nonna and my mom have taught me how to cook well - from pastries to lasagna. I enjoy cooking in my own kitchen and sharing meals with friends as much as possible. I am a Certified Culinary Medicine Specialist which means that I have the training and resources to help patients make lifestyle changes to manage certain chronic disease and medical diagnoses through movement and nutrition.

On this blog, I will share some of my takes on family recipes as well as cakes, snacks, and other favorite dishes. I am influenced largely by my Italian heritage, Culinary Medicine training, and plant-based ingredients and resources.

Thanks for choosing to read my blog. I hope you enjoy!

-Mia

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MOUNTAINEER 💛💙

Getting into medical school isn't just about grades and test scores—it's also about culture fit. In October 2018, I had the opportunity to speak with West Virginia University School of Medicine as an incoming first year medical student and 2018 Ms. Mountaineer winner on what being a Mountaineer means to me.

Ms. Mountaineer 2018

In October of 2018, I was one of ten West Virginia University students to compete in one of Mountaineer Week’s oldest traditions—the title of Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer. The nomination is given to students who have demonstrated exemplary academic performance and extracurricular involvement. I was so honored to compete for the title as well as stand alongside my proud parents on the field at Milan-Puskar Football Stadium to be awarded this prestigious honor.

Walk with A Future Doc at WVU School of Medicine 👟

Walk with a Future Doc is a national program encouraging medical students, physicians, and patients to get together and walk while conversing about health and wellness. Listen to my 2021 talk on the topic of "Mediterranean Lifestyle" at our virtual walk event.

In February 2023, I was featured as a guest on an episode of West Virginia University's GradLife 601 with host Dr. Nancy Caronia. It was an awesome opportunity to talk about why I chose medical school at WVU and reflect on my journey to medicine with graduation shortly approaching. I also talked about my studies abroad, my cultural background, and my strides toward living a healthy lifestyle.
